The Honest Take

Valley View is the secret that locals whisper about and hot spring veterans rank above everything else in Colorado. It’s on a 750-acre nature preserve run by the Orient Land Trust, a non-profit conservation organization. Clothing is optional and widely practiced. Capacity is strictly limited by reservation. The pools look out at the Sangre de Cristo Mountains across the San Luis Valley: one of the most dramatic views in the state.

Getting there requires planning: reservations are required, the road is rough for the last 3 miles, and the experience is adults-only and clothing-optional by default. If any of those are dealbreakers, there are excellent alternatives on this list.

If none of those are dealbreakers: Valley View is the best hot spring in Colorado. Not debatable.

A night under the stars in 104°F water with the Sangres turning pink at sunset is an experience that doesn’t really have a comparison. The $20 entry fee: which goes toward conservation: may be the best value on this list.

The Pools

Five pools ranging from 95°F to 106°F, set on a hillside with progressively better views as you climb. The highest pool sits at about 9,000 feet and looks directly across the San Luis Valley to the Sangre de Cristo range. At night it fills with stars.

The pools themselves are a mix of concrete and natural rock: not glamorous, but the setting makes any aesthetic quibbles irrelevant. The water is naturally hot and lightly odored (mild sulfur, not overwhelming).

Overnight option: Valley View offers campsites and primitive cabins. Staying overnight is the move: watching the Milky Way from the upper pools after the day crowd leaves is the defining experience.

Getting There

US-285 south from Denver to Moffat/Saguache, then County Road G east for 5 miles, then Forest Road 970 north for 3 miles. The last 3 miles are unpaved and rough: a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. Passenger cars can make it in dry conditions but will struggle in mud.

  • Distance from Denver: ~215 miles
  • Drive time: 3.5 hours
  • Last 3 miles: unpaved, rough, high clearance recommended
  • The San Luis Valley stretch of US-285 is flat and scenic: add 30 minutes if you stop at Great Sand Dunes NP (worth it)

Crowd Reality

Valley View’s reservation system keeps the experience manageable. Maximum daily capacity is around 100 people across the whole preserve, so it never feels overwhelming even on “busy” days. The real crowd risk is weekend overnights in summer: book 2–3 weeks ahead.

Weekday tip: On a Tuesday in September, you may have the upper pool to yourself for an hour at a time.

The Clothing-Optional Culture

Valley View is clothing-optional, not clothing-prohibited. Plenty of people bring suits. The atmosphere is respectful and non-voyeuristic: this is a conservation preserve, not a scene. The Orient Land Trust enforces a strict code of conduct.

If you’ve never visited a clothing-optional hot spring: the experience is notably different from what you might expect. Within about 20 minutes, it reads as completely normal.

What to Bring

  • Towel: essential, no rentals
  • High-clearance vehicle: or park at the base and hike in (1 mile)
  • Water and food: no concessions on site
  • Reservation confirmation: required at the gate
  • Headlamp: if staying for the evening pools

Is It Worth the Drive?

The 3.5-hour drive from Denver is the only honest barrier. If you can commit to it: especially as an overnight: Valley View is the best pure hot spring experience in Colorado. Nothing else combines this level of natural beauty, managed solitude, and authentic atmosphere for $20.

Best for: Hot spring veterans looking for the best Colorado has to offer, people who’ve done the commercial springs and want something real, overnight campers, stargazers.

Skip it if: The clothing-optional culture isn’t for you, or your car can’t handle a rough unpaved road.
