The Springs Resort & Spa (Pagosa Springs)

Fifty-two pools fed by the world's deepest hot spring, with San Juan Mountain views and genuinely therapeutic mineral water. Completely transformed in 2025. The furthest drive on this list and the hardest to argue against.

The Honest Take

Pagosa Springs sits on the Bingham Pool, the world’s deepest known hot spring: 1,002 feet deep, with water reaching 145°F at the surface before being cooled for soaking. That’s not a marketing fact; it’s a geological superlative that means the water is genuinely mineral-dense and therapeutically different from most springs.

The Springs Resort completed a massive expansion in April 2025, growing from 25 to 52 mineral pools along the San Juan River, with the San Juan Mountains as the backdrop. New additions include a panoramic sauna, grotto-style pool, contrast bathing waterfall stations, a cold plunge fed by the river, and a new restaurant (Wild Finch). The property won the USA TODAY 10BEST award for #1 Hot Springs in the USA in 2025. It earns it.

It’s the furthest drive on this list (5 hours) and the most expensive ($74/person for the standard day pass). Pagosa itself is one of Colorado’s most charming mountain towns. The drive through Wolf Creek Pass and the San Juan Mountains is among the best in Colorado. This is a weekend trip, not a day trip. Make it count.

The Pools

Fifty-two pools ranging from 35°F to 112°F. Pool temperatures are posted every 4 hours by staff. Each pool has a different mineral concentration as you move farther from the source: the pools nearest the Bingham Pool are the most mineral-rich and hottest.

The “Lobster Pot” pool, fed directly from the source at around 112°F, is a 30-second-maximum experience for even experienced visitors. The therapeutic sweet spot is 102–108°F, available across many mid-range pools.

Day pass options: Standard General Admission ($74/adult, 25 original pools) or Wellness Day Pass ($119 weekdays/$159 weekends) which adds 27 additional pools, a robe, locker, mud studio, and halotherapy sauna. Local residents within 60 miles pay $30.

Night access: Day visitors must be out by 9:30 PM.

Getting There

Two routes from Denver:

Route 1 (most scenic): US-285 south to Alamosa, then US-160 west over Wolf Creek Pass to Pagosa Springs. Wolf Creek Pass at 10,857 feet is stunning: and often snowy. Check conditions in winter; the pass can close.

Route 2 (faster in summer): I-25 south to Walsenburg, then US-160 west all the way. About 20 minutes longer but avoids Wolf Creek Pass.

  • Distance: ~230 miles via US-285
  • Drive time: 3.75 hours in good conditions
  • Wolf Creek Pass: closed or restricted multiple times per winter

Crowd Reality

Pagosa is popular but not overwhelmingly so. The 25 pools distribute the crowd well: you’ll always find a pool that isn’t packed, even on a busy Saturday. The hottest pools self-select and clear naturally.

The smart visit: Arrive at 3pm on a Saturday. Day crowds thin by 5pm, and you stay for the night session. Book a room at The Springs Resort or a nearby cabin so you can come back the next morning when it’s quietest.

What to Bring

  • Towel: rentals available but bring your own
  • Layers for the drive home: Wolf Creek can be 20°F colder than Denver
  • Reservation for lodging: Pagosa books out months ahead in fall and winter
  • Two days minimum: one day is not enough for Pagosa

Is It Worth the Drive?

It’s the best argument for a Colorado hot spring weekend on this entire list. The combination of the world’s deepest hot spring, 25 pools, a beautiful mountain town, Wolf Creek Pass, and the San Juan Mountains makes Pagosa Springs the complete experience.

Best for: Dedicated hot spring enthusiasts, anyone who wants the superlative experience, fall/winter weekend trips, couples who want a full destination.

Skip it if: You only have time for a day trip: the 4-hour drive each way makes a single-day visit hard to justify. Plan an overnight.
