Joyful Journey Hot Springs
A beloved, off-the-beaten-path hot spring in Colorado's San Luis Valley, near the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Great Sand Dunes National Park. Multiple pools, a peaceful wellness vibe, and one of the best night-sky soaking spots in the state.
The Honest Take
Joyful Journey sits in the middle of the San Luis Valley — a wide, flat, high-altitude basin ringed by mountains on three sides — near the small town of Moffat. It doesn’t have the dramatic canyon backdrop of Ouray or the resort amenities of Mt. Princeton. What it has is something rarer: genuine quietude, a wellness-forward atmosphere, and some of the darkest skies in Colorado.
The crowd here is different from most Colorado hot springs. People come intentionally. The vibe is calm, unhurried, and a little spiritual — the San Luis Valley has long drawn that energy. Nobody is here by accident; it’s not on the way to anywhere popular, which is precisely the point.
It’s also a natural companion to Great Sand Dunes National Park, which is about 25 miles east. Spend the morning hiking the dunes, then spend the afternoon and evening soaking under the Sangre de Cristo peaks as the stars come out. That combination is hard to beat anywhere in Colorado.
The Pools
Large soaking pool: The main pool, fed by the natural hot spring and kept around 100–102°F. Large enough to spread out, with mountain views across the valley.
Medium soaking pool: A slightly hotter option at roughly 104–106°F. Good for deeper soaking when the air is cold.
Cool plunge pool: Fed by cold mountain water. Essential for contrast soaking — the alternating hot/cold cycle is what your body actually wants.
Water temp: 100–106°F in the hot pools; cold plunge available.
Getting There
From Denver, take US-285 south through South Park and over Poncha Pass, then continue south through Saguache to Moffat. The route stays on US-285 almost the entire way — it’s one of Colorado’s most underrated scenic drives, passing through South Park and wide-open high desert.
- Distance from Denver: ~215 miles
- Drive time: 3–3.5 hours
- Road: US-285 the whole way, then a short stretch of county road. Easily accessible year-round.
Route note: This is one of the simpler drives on this list. No mountain passes above 9,000 feet, no hair-raising switchbacks. US-285 south of Salida opens up into the big sky San Luis Valley and is genuinely beautiful. Allow extra time if you want to stop at Great Sand Dunes.
Seasonal Conditions
| Season | Crowds | Road | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | Medium | Clear | Hot days in the valley; the pools are popular but rarely packed. Dunes best visited at sunrise. |
| Fall | Low | Clear | Best season. Cool air, warm water, excellent light on the Sangres. |
| Winter | Low | Watch US-285 | Night soaks under winter stars are exceptional. Valley can get cold — bring warm layers. |
| Spring | Low | Clear | Wildflowers on the valley floor start in May. Quiet and beautiful. |
Crowd Reality
Joyful Journey draws a steady but modest crowd. Unlike the I-70 corridor springs, it doesn’t get day-trippers who wandered off the highway. Weekends can bring a fuller pool, but it rarely feels crowded in the way that Glenwood or Strawberry Park can on a Saturday. Midweek visits are especially tranquil.
The strategy: The night sky here is remarkable — the San Luis Valley has minimal light pollution. An evening arrival timed for sunset and stargazing is the ideal Joyful Journey visit.
What to Bring
- Warm layers: The San Luis Valley runs cold at night even in summer. Temps can drop dramatically after sunset.
- Towel: Available to rent, but bring your own
- Cash or card: Day passes purchased at the front desk
- Plan for the dunes: If you’re combining with Great Sand Dunes, bring sandboarding gear or rent a sled at the park entrance. Go early — sand heats up fast by midday.
Is It Worth It?
If you’re making the Great Sand Dunes trip anyway, Joyful Journey is a no-brainer addition. Even on its own, the 3.5-hour drive is among the more manageable on this list, and the quiet, low-key atmosphere is a genuine contrast to the busier resort springs.
Best for: Travelers combining with Great Sand Dunes National Park. Anyone who wants a contemplative, unhurried soak without crowds. Night-sky enthusiasts — the dark skies here are exceptional.
Skip it if: You want mountain drama, a lively resort scene, or resort amenities. Joyful Journey is simple and intentional — and not trying to be anything else.
