The Honest Take

Hot Sulphur Springs doesn’t show up in the Instagram feeds. There’s no infinity pool framed against dramatic cliffs, no resort-grade towel service, no $18 smoothie bar at the exit. What it has instead is something rarer in Colorado hot springs: actual solitude on a Saturday afternoon.

This is a working mineral springs resort that’s been operating since 1903. The pools are utilitarian, the changing rooms are clean but basic, and the sulfur smell will follow you home in your hair. None of that is a bug. If you want a soak that actually feels like it’s doing something for your muscles: and a drive through some of the most underrated canyon scenery in the state: Hot Sulphur Springs is worth every mile.

The Pools

There are 21 pools spread across the hillside, ranging from very hot (~112°F) to comfortably warm (~95°F). Water comes directly from natural mineral springs: this is not a heated pool situation. The sulfur content is genuine, which is why the water has that distinctive rotten egg edge to it for the first 10 minutes until your nose adjusts.

The upper pools are the hottest and the least crowded. The lower pools near the main building run cooler and fill up first. On a weekday in fall, you can have an upper pool entirely to yourself.

Temperature tip: Move between pools to regulate. Most people start at 102°F, work up to 108°F, then cool down in the lower pools. Don’t go straight to 112°F: you’ll overheat.

Getting There

Take I-70 west from Denver to exit 232 (Granby/Kremmling), then US-40 west for 12 miles. The drive through Berthoud Canyon is legitimately beautiful and seriously underrated. Total drive from downtown Denver: 1.5 hours with no traffic.

Road conditions: US-40 is a paved state highway and stays open year-round. No AWD required. That said, the stretch over Berthoud Pass can be icy in winter: check CDOT road conditions before you go if there’s been recent snow.

Seasonal Conditions

FallLowClearBest season. Aspens on the drive.
WinterVery LowWatch for iceExcellent: soaking in cold air is the point.
SpringLowMuddy in spotsGood. Weekdays best.

The Crowd Reality

This is genuinely one of the least-crowded commercial hot springs in Colorado. The lack of Instagram appeal is a feature. On a Saturday in October, I shared a pool with two other people for two hours. Compare that to Strawberry Park (Steamboat), where you’ll wait 45 minutes for a spot.

Who goes here: Older locals, serious soakers, a handful of tourists who did their homework. Families with kids. Not the bachelorette-party crowd.

What to Bring

  • Towel: they rent them but bring your own
  • Water shoes: the deck gets slippery
  • Water bottle: you’ll sweat out a lot in the hot pools
  • Cash or card: they accept both, but the ATM charges a fee

Leave the expensive gear bag in the car. The changing rooms are basic.

Is It Worth It?

For a first Colorado hot springs experience, yes: unambiguously. The low crowds, the honest mineral water, the manageable drive, and the no-frills atmosphere make it the most approachable introduction to Colorado soaking. It won’t wow you on photos. It will absolutely unwind you.

Best for: First-timers, those who want to actually relax (not post), midweek day trips, anyone driving I-70 corridor.

Skip it if: You want dramatic scenery, Instagram backdrops, or resort amenities. For that, go to Iron Mountain in Glenwood Springs.
