The Honest Take

Let’s be clear about what Glenwood Hot Springs Pool is: it’s a giant outdoor swimming pool with naturally heated mineral water. At 405 feet long and 100 feet wide, it holds more than a million gallons of Yampah spring water. It’s genuinely impressive. It’s also loud, crowded, and more family swim session than meditative soak.

That’s not a knock: it’s just calibration. If you’re coming for peaceful therapeutic soaking, go to Iron Mountain (it’s right down the street). If you’re coming with kids who want to swim, or you want to experience something genuinely Colorado-scale and historic, Glenwood Pool delivers exactly what it promises.

It’s been operating since 1888. That’s not a marketing line: you can feel the history of the place when you walk in.

The Pools

Two pools:

  • The big pool (93°F): The world-famous one. Olympic-scale, lane ropes, water slides at one end. More swimming pool than hot spring.
  • The therapy pool (104°F): Smaller, adjacent, genuinely hot. This is where to go if you want the soaking experience without booking Iron Mountain.

The water comes from the Yampah spring and is naturally odorless. Soft, mineral-rich, and noticeably different from a chlorinated pool.

Getting There

Same as Iron Mountain: I-70 west to Glenwood Springs exit 116. The pool is right in downtown, impossible to miss. They have a large parking lot (paid on weekends in summer). It’s also directly adjacent to the Glenwood Springs Amtrak station: this is one of the few Colorado hot springs accessible by train.

Train option: The California Zephyr runs Denver → Glenwood Springs daily. A viable car-free day trip.

Crowd Reality

This is the most-visited hot spring in Colorado. On a July weekend afternoon, it feels like a community pool at capacity. The therapy pool is almost always more manageable. Come on a weekday, come in fall, or come first thing in the morning.

What to Bring

  • Swimsuit: required in both pools
  • Flip flops: the pool deck gets hot in summer
  • Sunscreen: the pool is fully exposed

Is It Worth It?

As a pure hot spring, no: Iron Mountain next door is better for soaking at a similar price. As a Colorado landmark and family swim experience, yes. It’s earned its reputation over 135 years. Just know what you’re getting before you arrive.

Best for: Families with kids, train travelers, history enthusiasts, people who want the “famous” Colorado hot spring experience.

Skip it if: You want a peaceful, meditative soak: Iron Mountain is 10 minutes away and a significantly better soaking experience.
